Fifth year (S10) — urban project
Stitching the patches in Daegu
This semester focused on the city of Daegu in Korea. The first step consisted in analysing and finding what challenges the city is facing in a given transect of 1x1 km. The next step was then to find a way to propose an answer to those challenges as well as a project of our choice by group of 3, working together on a bigger scale and by ourselves on a smaller one.
Phase 1 —
Identifying the challenges
The biggest challenge we identified for our part of the city of Daegu is the lack of homogeneity within the architecture, the urban development and the services of the neighborhood : we have "appateu" which are huge building complexes completely fenced up right next to traditional housing with their small and old houses swarming with their narrow alleyways. This is what we called the "patchwork" of typologies, architecture, urban tissues etc, which aren't connected together whatsoever. The challenge will then be to find a solution to "stitch" those patches together and create harmony within the urban patches and the diversity of services while connecting both sides of the railways. But one of the other challenges was to bring back trails and green spaces in the urban context of the city : the only trails available are only accessible with cars or trains and outside of the city and the green spaces are either small courtyard in between the traditional houses or communal private gardens within the appateu complexes.

Phase 2a —
Urban planning
The project is based on a new trail, or promenade, inside the city coming from the northern part of the railway to the southern part, offering different stops with activities and programs chosen thanks to the direct context : the stadium / sport complex, a commercial street, appateu complexes, the railway, an hospital, an important inntersection with the metro, one of the only public park, a youth center and art factory. The promenade can be seen from far away with visual links and signals as well as the continuity of the red path (using traditional korean red bricks). Each space is designed with the idea of stitching it with its surroundings to avoid creating new patches. Finally, the nnew public spaces take place on actual construction site which in real life are destined to become new appateu complexes.

Phase 2b —
Public spaces

This public space, Cultur'in Daegu, takes place right new to a youth center and an art factory. The idea was to offer a new space for young people to meet, rest, practice sports and passions.
The main visual signal for the promenade is the tensile which offers a covered space on the new square while paying homage to the history and heritage of Daegu : the textile manufacturing. The lines on the floor design follows different directions and guide the views from and to the square. One of the access has a new bus stop and murals which also are signals, such as the one on the other side. These murals are designed for the Art Factory which hosts workshops and classes for young people. The plaza is for the existing restaurants and bars. A skatepark, climbing wall and playground were also integrated into the space. Finally, to slow the cars around this playful area, a paved red speed bump was added in connection to a new public space in front of the appateu complex, as well as chicanes on the southern side which follow the shapes of the overall public space.

The next public space I designed is the small park and sitting area in front of the hospital. This space is also the landing spot for the footbridge of the promenade. The idea was to create a more intimate and calm space as it will also be used as an outdoor space for the hospital. The road between the two was closed expect for ambulances and direct access to the hospital. The space was designed in a geometrical outline which follows different lines for the context and the different entrances/openings. Raised green areas allow to plant trees while creating seating areas around it. The bridge also offers a covered seating area. It was designed for the crossing of bicycles and pedestrians and as an architectural piece of art which makes it noticeable from far away On the other side of that bridge is also a more intimate park which takes place inside the appateau complex. A few cloed entrances to the actual complexes were strategically disposed around the place. In opposition to the first park, this one was designed with more of an organic outline. The green areas here are small hills and also offer sitting area on their borders while opening the view on the bridge from the other extremity of the promenade.

The final space I designed is the biggest park of the promenade and offers additional spaces to the stadium and sport complex. A concrete plaza with a stage creates the opportunity to bring people here for events, independent or in collaboration with the complex. This raised scene is also a tensile for the heritage of the city and has a red brick wall in the back to become a visual signal from the surrounding streets. In addition to the plaza, some "bubbles" were designed within the ground itself, some of those sitting pods are oriented towards the scene and others towards the food trucks alley, offering different uses. This alley creates the direct connection to the complex and offers a place to eat and drink before, during or after a sport event for example, with the trucks coming and going as well as a permanent café. Sitting areas inspired by the other two parks mentionned before are available thanks to the new raised design of the green spaces. A larger green space with trails inside was also added to create the perfect place to run or walk in a denser vegetation, which also helps to make a smooth transition with the private area of the northern appateu complex.
