Third year (S5) — urban project

The City of Tomorrow

An urban project to create a new dynamic district located on one of the major axes of the city of Nancy studied during the first phase of this studio. This neighborhood project led to the design of an urban island. It provided an opportunity to learn how to compose and design on the scale of the city : housing, equipments, roads, blocks and plots. Ultimately, a dynamic and autonomous district integrating a new landscape network, a green corridor, as well as the development of soft modes of transport.

Phase 1 —

Analysis of an axis

During the first phase of this studio, the idea was to analyze different aspects of the axis given to us, by mapping the area in order to make a master plan about the stakes and project areas.

Phase 2 —

Composition plan

The second phase consisted of creating an urban composition plan of a selected area with major stakes drawn from the master plan, creating the blocks, the plot and street plan. I chose the south part of the axis, which is a gate for the city of Nancy. The main challenge was to turn it into a dynamic entry area where people stop by (with a project of P+R, commercial street, new public transport lines, housing, theatre) in order to take soft or public modes of transport. Finally, there was a project to make the area autonomous with urban farms, market gardeners and a wind farm.

Phase 3 —

Urban block project

The final step was the project of an urbain island, creating the plot, occupations and functions, accesses, separations. Therefore, on this block, we can find 3 collective housing buildings with a park in the heart of the block, shared roof gardens and a commercial ground floor on the main street side, as well as semi-individual houses with gardens. And finally a complex with catering and exhibition areas, offices and an underground parking.
